In his nearly 40 year career as an investor and serial entrepreneur, Chris Burch has broadened his portfolio to make room for a luxury resort on the Indonesian island of Sumba.
Partnering with proprietor and land owner James McBride, the two purchased the island paying out $30 million refurbishing and restoring the lodging into a five-star resort called Nihiwatu, nicknamed The Edge of Wildness.
The name means “mortar stone” as the beach was initially named after a rock configuration.
Within one year, Travel + Leisure readers voted Nihiwatu the best hotel in the world in 2016.
Nihiwatu has 27 private villas with prices for a one-bedroom starting at $750 a night. All meals, Wi-Fi Internet, a mini bar, activities by sea such as stand-up paddle boarding are included in the room rate. More to read on bjtonline.com.
Two, two-story tree houses with a bedroom, bathroom and balcony, are also on hand.
What’s more, Chris Burch’s residence, Raja Mendaka, which includes a main house and four additional villas, is available to guests with prices roughly $14,000 a night. Check on forbes.com for additional article
Amenities include a beach spa, wellness center that makes daily group yoga and private yoga sessions available as well as surfing and surfing lessons, hiking and fishing. Pleasure trips, such as to a blue lagoon where guests can leap off the rocks and plunge into the water to swim, is another service that is readily available.
For the horseman and beginners, riding stables are on the grounds. Guides are at the guests disposal as the team offers sunset beach horse-riding trips. And a resident horse whisperer teaches guests to come together and communicate with the horses.
In an earlier interview Burch stated he purchased the hotel to preserve it and to give back to the community. A share of the hotel’s proceeds are contributed to the Sumba Foundation, which supports community-based undertakings.
Nihiwatu has turned into the leading local employer on the island. Future plans of Burch and McBride call for expansion and building resorts in Costa Rica and Nicaragua.
Above and beyond Nihiwatu, Burch’s entrepreneurial success includes domestic and worldwide real estates initiatives in Palm Springs, Florida and Southampton, New York.
